Orthodox Easter – Arrival in Athens

The plane trip from Washington to Athens was about 15 hours. I watched 3 movies and played Farm Chase – basically Pac-Man but with sheep trying to eat the chicken “Pac-Man”. We stopped in New York (JFK) and after sitting on a plane for 6 hours I recommend you stand up slowly, so you don’t get dizzy. You should also wait a little before you eat because if you eat to fast your stomach will feel weird.

When we arrived in Athens it was hot and humid, but you get used to it quickly. When you leave the airport on Easter, they give you chocolate eggs that are red because of tradition. You should eat these quickly because they melt!

Jamison and I with our chocolate eggs at the airport.

If you rent a car, make sure you have International Driver’s License. When we got into the car, it was really hot and there were a lot of annoying bugs.

We drove to our hotel in Athens, the Crowne Plaza. When we got to the room, there were more red eggs. I recommend not cracking them on your head.

I didn’t eat them.

Don’t get a smoking room, they smell bad. We accidentally got one for the first night, but then switched.

I don’t remember falling asleep.

After I took a quick nap, my parents woke me up because we needed to stay on local time.

Those shoes!

We went to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and saw the changing of the guard. The guards wear hats that look like berets with a tassel and “elfy” shoes with pom-poms at the end. The hat is called a “Farion” and the shoes are called “Tsarouchia”.

We walked around downtown Athens, but most things were closed because it was Easter Sunday. We had our first Greek meal and then went to bed
